You spin it until the arrow lines up with the hole. Then you just feed about ten feet of line on each side and spin it. It spools up as you spin. If you have leftover line inside the spool you will need to take the unit off to empty the line. You are supposed to be able to press-in the panels on the side enough to clear the retaining ledge to free the top of the unit to pull out the spool (you have to do this on both sides) NOTE: This Head Is Strictly For Straight Shaft Model Trimmers not fit Curved Shaft Trimmer

I used up all the line that came in it and couldn’t figure it how to get it apart to add string. After taking it off and putting back on my old head I figured it out. You have to line up the arrows and push the string all the way through and get even on both sides then turn it and wind the string on the spool.
